BIOGRAPHIE
Paul EBOUA est né au Cameroun et a démarré le Basket à 14 ans à Douala. Immédiatement repéré par une le Stella Azzurra Roma, il a quitté son pays et sa famille après seulement une année de basket dans les jambes. Il a quitté le continent africain et s’est installé en Italie, alors qu’il ne parlait ni italien ni anglais. Très vite, il a fait sensation sur le continent européen aussi, en réalisant de solides performances à l’ANGT qui avait lieu à Kaunas en janvier 2018. Il connu sa première expérience professionnelle en deuxième division italienne à l’âge de 17 ans. Il fut ensuite prêté dans l’élite 2 ans plus tard. N’ayant jamais perdu de vue son objectif de rejoindre la NBA, il s’est essayé plusieurs fois à la Draft, sans réussite. Il parvenu malgré tout à obtenir un Exhibit10 Contract auprès des Heat de Miami, puis des Nets de Brooklyn, sans pour autant parvenir à s’installer durablement dans le paysage américain. Il s’essaya à la G-League, sans réussite. Le retour en Italie fut donc logique pour ce joueur qui semble enfin connaitre la saison de l’explosion, au sein de l’antichambre locale : 8.8 pts et 11.7 d’évaluation en 21,9 minutes jouées en moyenne.

POINTS FORTS
Paul EBOUA est un joueur intérieur mobile, susceptible d’évoluer sur les postes 4 ou 5. Il présente des qualités de courses mais aussi de verticalité qui font de lui un joueur intéressant en ce qui concerne la dimension défensive du jeu. Il sait défendre le step-out, switcher si besoin, mais également opérer des close-out dissuasif sans pour autant se jeter… Il excelle dans l’art du rebond offensif et offre un grand nombre de secondes chances à son équipe. Offensivement, il développe progressivement la panoplie du joueur extérieur et peut déjà être amené à driver le cercle comme un poste 3 le ferait. Il sait exécuter cette tâche dès lors où il utilise le dribble à bon escient (voir ci-après).

POINTS FAIBLES
Ayant une expérience basket réduite du fait de son histoire, Paul EBOUA manque encore parfois de fondamentaux individuels dans différents aspects du jeu. Il semble de temps à autres hors de contrôle et les américains pourraient dire qu’il lui manque un « Stop Button ». Ballon en main, il peut parfois s’embarquer dans des actions incongrues, vouées à l’échec et ne sait pas s’arrêter. Il ne sent pas vraiment le jeu encore, et fait de mauvais choix, notamment lorsqu’il évolue face au cercle, dans un positionnement de joueur extérieur. Ses pourcentages à 2 pts et 3 pts était faibles jusqu’à la saison 2022/2023 mais semblent en progression actuellement (à confirmer). Paul EBOUA peut se montrer en difficulté ballon en main mais également sur la création en situation de post-up.

RESUMÉ
Il a tout quitté après seulement un an de basket dans les jambes afin de conquérir l’Europe. Il a rejoint un pays dont il ne parlait pas la langue à 15 ans et s’est forgé une force de caractère qui l’a conduit à ne jamais se détourner de ses rêves. Il n’a pas été Drafté mais a fleurté avec le bout du banc NBA. Il est désormais dans une antichambre européenne reconnue et semble éclore enfin au grand jour… (présenté le 23 février 2023).

BIOGRAPHY

Paul EBOUA was born in Cameroon and started playing basketball at the age of 14 in Douala. He was immediately spotted by Stella Azzurra Roma and left his country and family after only one year of organized basketball. He left the African continent and moved to Italy without speaking either Italian or English. He quickly made a name for himself on the European scene as well, delivering strong performances at the ANGT in Kaunas in January 2018.
He gained his first professional experience in the Italian second division at just 17 years old and was then loaned to the top division two years later. Never losing sight of his goal of reaching the NBA, he entered the Draft several times without success. He nevertheless managed to earn Exhibit 10 contracts with the Miami Heat and later the Brooklyn Nets, without being able to establish himself long-term in the American basketball landscape. He also tried the G League, unsuccessfully.
A return to Italy therefore made sense for a player who now seems to be enjoying a breakout season in the country’s second tier: 8.8 points and a 11.7 efficiency rating in 21.9 minutes per game on average.

STRENGTHS

Paul EBOUA is a mobile interior player capable of playing both the power forward (4) and center (5) positions. He possesses strong running ability and vertical athleticism, making him an interesting defensive asset. He can defend step-outs, switch when needed, and execute effective close-outs without overcommitting. He excels at offensive rebounding, providing his team with many second-chance opportunities.
Offensively, he is gradually developing a perimeter-oriented skill set and can already attack the rim off the dribble like a small forward. He can perform this role effectively when he uses his dribble wisely (see below).

WEAKNESSES

Due to his relatively limited basketball background, Paul EBOUA still sometimes lacks individual fundamentals in various aspects of the game. At times, he appears out of control—what Americans might say is that he lacks a “stop button.” With the ball in his hands, he can occasionally get involved in ill-advised actions destined to fail and struggles to pull back.
His feel for the game is still developing, and he makes poor decisions, particularly when facing the basket in a perimeter-player role. His two-point and three-point shooting percentages were low up until the 2022/2023 season but seem to be improving (to be confirmed). Paul EBOUA can struggle when handling the ball and also in creating offense in post-up situations.

SUMMARY

After just one year of organized basketball, he left everything behind to conquer Europe. At 15, he moved to a country whose language he did not speak and developed strong character traits that have kept him focused on his dreams. Undrafted, he nevertheless came close to the end of an NBA bench. Now competing in a respected European second division, he finally appears to be breaking out into the spotlight…
